Kapapa Island

Kapapa (kah-PAH-pah) is a small 3 acre island located about two miles off Heeia Pier on the east coast of Oahu.

In 2000 biologists counted 461wedge-tailed shearwaters, Puffinus pacificus nests on Kapapa and over 200 chicks survived to fledging. Several native Hawaiian plant species including Scaevola sericea, Sida fallax, Portulaca villosa, Jacquemontia sandwicensis, Cuscuta sandwicensis and Sesuvium portulacastrum are also found growing on Kapapa. The tallest trees are the introduced Ironwood , Casurania.

The island was designated a National Historic Place in 1972 because several small midden site and burials from 1750-1790 AD are found there.
