Sooty Shearwater Puffinus griseus A large sized sooty-brown shearwater with white underwing. Length: 16 inches Wingspan: 43 inches. Sexes similar Feet dark brown. Wing are narrow and swept back. Dark bill with tube on top. Underwings are brownish-black with silvery coverts, normally showing as white wing-flash. Feet dark brown. The Sooty Shearwater is a long-lived, wide-ranging pelagic seabird, that nests on sub-Antarctic islands off New Zealand, Tasmania, and Chile. After nesting, shearwaters disperse(April-November) north to forage in the productive waters of the Peru Current, the California Current, and as far as the Gulf of Alaska. Some birds have been seen flying northwest in the central Pacific near Hawaii in March, April and May, and southwards from September to November.
