Black-winged Petrel
Pterodroma nigripennis

Length 12 inches, Wingspan 25-28 inches. Bill is black. Legs and feet flesh colored occasionally blue. The forehead,chin and throat are white with a dark patch passing through and below the eye. Upperparts grey merging into blackish brown across rump. One of the easiest gadfly-petrels to identify due to combination partial grey collar, greyer underparts then congeners and consciously patterned underwings.

Flight is rapid and strong bounding and wheeling in great arcs. Does not follow ships.

Breeding is restricted to SW Pacific. Dispersal from nesting areas begins in May and the birds return to their breeding locations by November.
