This flightless species is also called the "small Oahu rail". Bones of Porzana ziegleri were collected at Barber's Point and Ulupau. This was the smallest of eleven rail species known to have occurred in Hawaii, except for the recently described Porzana keplerorum found on Maui. Named after Alan Ziegler, a former Bishop Museum zoologist, pioneer of Hawaiian fossil bird studies and author of Hawaiian Natural History, Ecology, and Evolution.
