Oh, buckle up, this will be long but educational, I promise.
Sooo…a new season is upon us. You have finally decided to visit our home, the beautiful Hawaiian islands. You would like to see everything that there is to see.
You are eager to learn about the activity options on Oahu, so you search for “Oahu Circle Tours” or the “Ultimate Circle Island tour of Oahu” in your browser because someone has already recommended it to you. You are suddenly overwhelmed with the large number of tours presented, seemingly offering the same or very similar tours. But you do not know who to trust, which website has a long-standing good reputation, which company makes empty promises, who provides the best value for your hard-earned money and can match your interests closest. You are wise to do your homework in advance, you do not want to gamble with your family’s valuable vacation time.
This Q&A answer was not created by Chat GPT or any other AI programs, I am a human and small business owner with the clear intent to help you understand the circle-island-tour business and the Oahu providers better. I will show you how to find out which company will actually take you to the places they advertise, how much they charge and how much it really costs you, what locations they include, if they pay for your lunch, and if you break down all the hype behind the fluffed of words, what is actually left, what is the best value for you and your family.
This is my area of expertise, my husband and I own Oahu Nature Tours and we provided Circle Island tours to our visitors for almost 30 years on this island along with our trusted guides. We have over a million satisfied guests “under our belt” by now, with a 4.9 approval rating, and last year we were nominated as a top-ten finalist for the “Best Day Tour in North America” award by Arival and Global Tour Review, based on actual verified reviews on all review platforms combined.

So, first a few words of advice when comparing Oahu’s Circle Island tours:
REVIEWS: If a company is relatively new and suddenly they boast over 4000 excellent reviews, you can bet those have not been generated organically. Most people only write reviews if they are not satisfied with a service or product. It is much harder to have a client review you when everything went well and understandably so because this should be the norm.
MANAGEMENT RESPONSE: It should definitely be a red flag when you read the critical reviews and the company’s management is not reading, addressing and replying to the customer complaint or just paste in a cookie cutter response that “oh sorry we will strive for better next time, etc”. That usually means that the company either does not care about its customers’ experience because they do not plan to stick around to see the long term consequences of it, or they are well aware that these repeated negative comments mention legitimate problems but instead of addressing them they are hoping to bury them under thousands of purchased reviews.
PERMITS AND INSURANCE: You should also protect yourself and your family by always making sure that a company you are booking with is in fact registered to offer activities in Hawaii, that their vehicle is clearly marked with a real PUC license number and that they have proper insurance to cover you too. The sheer number of fly-by-night entities on this island who leave you exposed by not following the rules and the law is staggering already.
DEPARTURES: You should also be careful going with companies who advertise coastal island tours on the weekends. It is well-known to anyone living on these islands that, as a tour company, it is not considered respectful to the local communities to bother them on their beaches on Saturdays and Sundays. We had meetings with these communities over the years and always agreed to give them the space they deserve on their days off in exchange for a warm and welcoming Aloha Spirit towards our guests on all other days.
EMPLOYEE ROLES, TRAINING AND SAFETY: Ask them if their driver is also the narrator or they provide a separate employee for these very different and energy-consuming tasks. Oahu’s roads are the busiest in the nation. Yes, you have read it right, our islands’ residents sit in traffic jams the most hours per year. Guides are narrating the tour all day, answering questions from different parties, they help ordering and distributing lunches, fill out forms, etc. You do not want your driver to be tired by the end of a long day so it’s best to separate these roles for the safety of our passengers, yet many companies on the island fail to do so because it is expensive to pay two employees for 10-11 hours. It is also a question of the different training these roles usually receive. The best companies employ professional commercial drivers with a state-issued CDL license who can put a bus in a tight corner with ease and many of their guide narrators are scientists and teachers, experts in their selected fields. Those two skill sets are rarely overlapping in the real world and it would not even be fair to expect it. Separating those two roles you get the best of both worlds.
IS LUNCH INCLUDED: The best companies do provide a real all-inclusive tour with no surprises, lunch included. But watch the wording of the advertisements posted by some companies and understand the possible ‘bait and switch” elements. Many companies are boasting that they include lunch in their tour. What they actually mean and will do is that they include the lunch stop on their itinerary but they will not cover your lunch cost, you and your family will have to pay it out of pocket. This is one way to make their tour seem cheaper than our all-inclusive option where you will not be asked for additional monies, “voluntary donations” or any other names for additional, hidden amounts.
ENTRY FEES: Same goes for entry fees, a real all-inclusive option already covers all your entry fees in advance, you will not have to fork out additional amounts for any of the visited locations. For a family of four this can be a significant added amount, so please be careful, ask and confirm specifically before you book.
ILLEGAL STOPS ADVERTISED: Watch out for companies who list drive-by locations as a stop. Many tour companies are listing currently on their websites stops that are absolutely illegal for tour vendor buses to stop at. Currently, these are: Diamond Head Lookout, Makapuu Point (both upper and lower road), Lanikai Beach, Laniakea Beach, Waimanalo Beach, Sunset Beach, Haleiwa Beaches and some others as well. The only way these companies can take you to these advertised locations is by breaking the law.
VEHICLES: Let’s talk about vehicles and shed some deep misconceptions. If you have unlimited funds and do not care about the price then by all means just go and hire yourself a private guide. But it will NOT be cheap, that is for sure. A good one I mean and on this island. A trained, insured, registered and legal one. Not your average weekend-warrior in their little decrepit personal car who will leave you hanging physically, mentally and financially if them or a third party causes an accident. A good one will cost you somewhere between 1600 -2400 for the day. That is NOT including lunches and other fees, just the guide usually. Operating a legal business with proper permits and licenses and paying dues like PUC and GET taxes is expensive in Hawaii. Most buses are not private. For the excellent rate they advertise their tours they cannot be private. First I would like to address the fact that I HAD small vans for years and minibuses also. None of those matched the power and luxury of the Silverline buses we later used. These vehicles were designed for these all-day island tours and with your comfort in mind. The constant complaints we have seen in the past about smaller vans were that it was very hard to get in and out of the back benches above the wheel wells especially. The space in these 14-15 passenger cargo vans is just too narrow to make multiple entries and de-boarding all day. They were designed to only shuttle people to airports or between hotels but not to go on a 130-mile circle-island-tour with multiple stops. The small vans are also more likely to break down over the Pali and leave you stranded on the other side of the island or having to taxi back for a fortune. Companies with larger fleets have immediate replacement buses to send for you if needed and continue your adventure in the unlikely event that it happens but, as I mentioned, these buses were designed to be touring buses with huge aquarium-like panorama windows, comfortable separate seats and upright walking to your seating area versus having to be hunched and bunched up with total strangers on those narrow unseparated benches in small vans. The Silverline buses also have the best HEPA AC filters you can find, even better than what the airlines use which can be welcome news to people who are worried about their vehicle’s internal air quality (since covid).
COMMERCIAL LOCATIONS: Establish with them in advance what each of their actual stops’ value is. Because if you see a list of “stores” they take you instead of valuable, paid, sightseeing locations, then those are not going to enrich your life or vacation days in any way, it just results in them getting kickbacks after you from those stores.
————————————————————————–
So, these are some of the points you should be aware of before booking a circle tour. Who your guide is, does the company value you enough to give you a separate driver, are they telling you the final price or they hide uncomfortable surprises for later, what your vehicle comfort will be, is it fully air-conditioned, and are they going to just drag you from one commercial location to another all day long for commissions.
Congrats on making it to this point and if you are still reading it then you deserve to be on the best tour. But to set jokes aside, I am immensely proud that our company, Oahu Nature Tours was named this past year as a top-ten-best day-tour company in the entire North America and hopefully this should also give me some “street cred” with you. Because this award was given to us by Global Tour review and we have never paid for a single review in our lives. Never had to.
My co-owner and husband, Michael Walther is a cultural anthropologist and ornithologist who has written 7 books about Hawaii’s native bird and plant species and also has a degree in Environmental Studies.
As a final word, I just felt the need to share a little background information on all this because I know that you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of island tours offered online, let alone having to decide which one to reserve for yourself and your family. I will work on an actual side-by side comparison chart soon with real verified stops and prices, but it will be no small feat as some websites list 381 (!!!) day tours on Oahu which is just ridiculous. I am almost sure some of those are just fake funneling sites for SEO purposes but we’ll see…

DISCLAMER UPDATE 2025-12-31:
Our company’s name is OAHU NATURE TOURS. We created the original Ultimate Circle Island Adventure way back in 2014.
By that time we had been doing other hiking, sightseeing and birding tours with great success since 1995. We took 25 thousand guests on our adventures every year. My husband has written numerous books about Hawaii’s natural history and we felt that we wanted to create the best possible or in other words the “ULTIMATE” tour that our guests can have on the island. One that would not only show people pretty spots but also would make them appreciate the natural beauty of these islands that we have left to protect and care for. As usual, we wanted something not only entertaining but also an adventure where you could leave us at the end of the day with the very satisfying feeling of having an awesome vacation day on a beautiful tropical island but also having learnt something important. I personally designed a special itinerary before my parents’ highly anticipated visit that year because I wanted them to have the best time of their life. So, I included all my favorite spots on the island, both well-known and hidden gems, that I could think of. That is how it all started. Agents told us nobody would want to buy this tour, it is too long, people just want to go to the beach, etc… but they were wrong. People loved our tour from the beginning. We received rave reviews every day because we paid extra attention to that every single element of our tours, guide training, the vehicles we use, the safety procedures, the pricing, office staff, the tour content and the food is all superb quality. We provided tours to our private guests, cruise ship groups and corporations for three decades. Being nominated for the best day tour in North America last year has made me very proud of our accomplishments.

Aloha and Mahalo,
Cecilia Walther
