The abacaxi is one of four different types of pineapples. Mexico and Venezuela are the largest producers of this type of pineapple. This species is high in sugar and low in acidity, which is why it also goes by the name "sugarloaf" pineapple. Additionally, it is resistant to disease and weighs about 11 pounds! However, these pineapples are too soft, making them quite fragile. Thus, they ship poorly and aren’t exported to any other states. As a result, Hawaii is one of the only few places where tourists, and locals alike, can expect to eat them.
