Have you ever noticed that pineapples in Hawaii taste sweeter than on those on the contiguous 48 states?
The species of pineapple grown in the Aloha state is the abacaxi. The abacaxi is one of four different types of pineapples. Mexico and Venezuela are the largest producers of this type of pineapple. This species is high in sugar and low in acidity, which is why it also goes by the name “sugarloaf” pineapple. Additionally, it is resistant to disease and weighs about 11 pounds!
However, these pineapples are too soft, making them quite fragile. Thus, they ship poorly and aren’t exported to any other states. As a result, Hawaii is one of the only few places where tourists, and locals alike, can expect to eat them.
The Dole Plantation offers visitors the opportunity to encounter and taste various types of pineapples. It is a popular stop for tourists because of the famous Dole whip. The Dole whip is a classic dairy-free dessert. This frozen treat is soft serve and creamy, consisting mostly of dried pineapple juice.
Guests have the opportunity to taste this delicious treat on two of our circle island tours. The tours we offer, with stops at the Dole Plantation are: Ultimate Circle Island Adventure with Waimea Waterfall, and North Shore Circle Island Adventure.
Join us on your next adventure to Hawaii to taste the world’s sweetest pineapples!
